These enchanting animals are made by Arteiman: a small business owned by a woman in La Paz, Bolivia.
The subordinate roles women play in Bolivian society, combined with their lack of education, result in a severe problem that gets swept under the rug. Women do not have the economic ability to separate themselves from oppressive, violent situations. Arteiman unwaveringly labors to empower the down-trodden women artisans all across La Paz, Bolivia by offering them the opportunity to earn themselves a life of dignity. This business helps women gain self-esteem by teaching them the skills necessary to become wage earners for their families, live in safe communities, and realize the importance of education. Arteiman is embedded in local customs and recognizes the sensitivity of changing a culture that has driven violence and anger towards women for many generations.
There are currently 8 full time artists and 30 who work part time. Individual and small groups of artisans produce arrangements of handicrafts that echo their native cultures. These handcrafts are produced locally and sent to La Paz, where the retail and exporting business is coordinated. Arteiman is committed to promoting the concept and vision of Fair Trade.
